Accountants for Engineering Businesses

Understanding the challenges facing engineering businesses

● Are projects sitting unbilled because your accounting isn't set up to track cost and value project by project?
● Have you outgrown your finance function, with the technical and financial sides of the business no longer speaking the same language?
● Are you growing weary of technical advice delivered without an understanding of your business or your ambitions?

Our 'nerd' in your corner

"I’ve always had a fascination with science and engineering since I was a kid, driven by a desire to understand how things work. Physics, mechanical and electronic engineering were particular fascinations.
At university I took that fascination and studied Computer Science, and despite the name it covered more than just programming. I got to embrace my passion for electronics, being able to design and build circuits around the ZX80 microchip and flashing EEPROMs. Beyond that I was doing NLP (Natural Language Processing) and AI, all back in the early 2000s.
Even though life took me elsewhere, through advising on R&D claims (where I’ve been involved in claims totalling hundreds of millions of expenditure) I still get to follow AI, NLP, cryptography and the practical applications of science. I just love the nerdiness of it all.
For you, that means you’ll have an adviser who doesn’t just understand the technical side of your business, but is fascinated by it."

Do I need an Engineering specialist accountant?

Well, that depends.

If you can't say which projects actually made money, or if a fixed-price contract is quietly losing you margin, a generalist accountant probably isn't built for that.
That's engineering-specific ground.
To find out how we can you and your engineering business, get in touch with David.

Project accounting and work-in-progress reporting that shows cost and value job by job, not just at year end.

R&D tax credits prepared and defended by an adviser who has been a part of HMRC's Consultative Committee in the past.

Management accounts and strategic CFO advisory built around cash flow and payment-term pressure, not a generic template.

Asset finance and capital allowance guidance when you need to invest in equipment or technology.

Specialist help for Engineering Businesses

R&D Tax Credits

We prepare and defend R&D claims, not just file them and move on.

Claims prepared, defended and explained to you in plain English. We will make sure you understand every step that's taken.

Advice which takes in all your business circumstances, not just isolated to the R&D claim, so you have co-ordinated and consistent advice.

Experience from claims reaching into the millions in qualifying expenditure, from SMEs to UK-listed PLCs.

Share Options and EMI Schemes

Getting equity into the hands of the people who built the business, structured properly from day one.

    EMI scheme design and implementation.

Share-based payment reporting: giving staff share options creates an accounting cost that has to be recorded, even with no cash changing hands.

Valuations that stand up to scrutiny: HMRC needs a defensible value for the shares, or they can challenge it later and unpick the scheme's tax benefits.

Management Accounts

Numbers you can trust and use to run the business, not just file away every quarter.

Monthly or quarterly reporting, built around what you actually need to see, not a generic template.

Clear visibility of cash flow and runway, so growth doesn't catch you out.

Accurate and up-to-date management information to enable you to make more informed and effective decisions. Always delived in language you can understand.

Strategic CFO Advisory

An experienced, senior finance voice in the room when you need one, without the cost or commitment of a full-time hire.

Forward planning for growth, funding rounds and changes to the business's structure.

Support through decisions your in-house team hasn't faced before, from board packs to investor questions.

Someone who understands the business behind the numbers, not just the balance sheet in front of them.

Capital Allowances

An experienced adviser who can maximise and optimise potential tax reliefs.

Considers future needs, not just what has been spent in the previous financial year.

    Practical advice on funding options.

Helping you consider the investment impact on the business and how the decision could impact future growth.

Currency Hedging

Protecting margin when international sales and suppliers bring currency risk into your business.

Exposure reviewed properly, as part of your wider financial and cash flow planning.

Practical hedging approaches built around your actual trading pattern, not generic advice.

Joined up with your international VAT position and cross-border reporting, not handled separately.

FAQs: David answers your questions

  • We'll look at the right mix of asset finance, leasing and available tax reliefs, so you're not funding it all out of cash reserves.

  • We build the financial visibility to catch margin erosion early, whether it's scope creep, rising material costs or an unfunded change order, rather than finding out about it at invoice stage.

  • That's what proper project accounting and work-in-progress reporting are for.
We help you track cost and value project by project, so profitability isn't a surprise once the job's finished.

  • Yes. We often step in where claims have been split across different advisers who don't talk to each other, and bring it all under one roof.

  • Yes - it's such a common pressure for so many engineering firms.
We can help you see your real cash position and plan around it, including short-term working capital options like invoice financing where they make sense.
